Titian Foundation provides access to better educational opportunities for less fortunate Indonesians through the improvement of their education, knowledge and skills to offer them a brighter future. We are also working to improve the quality of Indonesia’s teachers and setting-up Community Learning Centres to ensure traditional skills are retained and new ones learned. We are a professionally managed, voluntary organization governed by a Board of Trustees on a pro-bono basis and have the support of numerous professional volunteers. We are independently audited by the international accounting firm PwC and are pleased to provide financial statements upon request.
From its roots in Bayat, Central Java, Titian has grown to run projects and open Community Learning Centres in Padang, Sumatra, Tangerang, Semarang, and, in more recent months, Lombok to the east of Bali. Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, is Titian’s administrative HQ.
Little over a decade and Titian now have more than a thousand alumni. We can see the fruits of our programme intervention, that by educating youngsters brings greater impact in the long term. Their perspective on life were greatly enriched when they had the opportunity to become Titian Foundation scholarship students.
The first thing our alumni did after their own necessities is fulfilled is to fix their family home and ensuring their younger siblings get proper education, to sharing the nook of their home for mini library to improve literacy in their communities. Some even eligible to travel far, farther beyond their imagination, for jobs and further academic pursuant.
They have become the real changemakers, the Masters of Resilience.
Although Titian started by re-building earthquake damaged schools and moved into scholarships to put less fortunate youngsters through senior high school, this latter programme has been its most successful and long lasting. In 2011 a university scholarship programme was introduced.
Titian’s TQI programme is designed to bring new and more effective teaching methods to Indonesia's schools. Teachers become more creative in their approach to the teaching and learning process and as a result it becomes more interesting and fun meaning that lessons are more easily understood by their students.
It was natural to turn our attention to the communities around the locations where we offered scholarships. Hence we developed the Titian Community Learning Centres. Places where all members of the community can learn new things and share their knowledge and skills with one another. Titian now has nine CLCs with one more under construction in Rembitan, southern Lombok.
The way Titian runs its programmes is characterised by care, attention to detail and sustainability.
Titian’s ‘signature’ project management approach emphasises quality over quantity. Titian spends extra time recruiting the right students, community members and teachers, and providing them with the nurturing and support they need to ensure they make the most of the opportunities they are given.
All Scholarship students receive special lessons in life skills as well as counselling throughout their three years. For the Scholarship Programme, Titian has created a Titian alumni for graduates to keep in touch and provide encouragement and mentoring for current students.
Titian follows-up and monitors the operation and results of all its programmes in great detail to ensure donors get the best possible return on their investment.
Despite the intensity of this approach, Titian achieves a cost efficiency ratio of under 15% — significantly below that of our international counterparts.
Titian understands that educating youngsters brings greater wealth in the long term. Communities that are engaged in entrepreneurial ventures are self-sustaining. Budding entrepreneurs employ more people and create greater wealth.
The Key to Everything Titian Does is Sustainability.
