There are many ways to convey values to and instill values in our children. Performing a play can serve as an effective means to get the message across for teenagers. Gen 1 Titian Tangsel Scholarship got their acting debut as the opening act for the School Students Organization (OSIS) Solidarity Competition at the SMKN 4 Tangsel on Sunday, March 17th, 2018.

They had less than five months to prepare and what made things particularly challenging was that they could only convene during the weekends. Students got involved in the whole process from, from writing the script to casting. The script carried the theme ‘strengthening ones’ character through capacity building’. Once the script was ready, they decided among themselves who would take which roles in the play. They also invited their school friends to participate in the play as long as they were committed. They started rehearsing in the last week of January this year, with the last rehearsal just a week before the performance. This drama was chaperoned by the ladies of Soroptimist International of Jakarta (SIJ), Mrs. Tia and Ms. Nuri and a volunteer SIJ friend, Mr. Ari.

The story of the play is about how a school shouldn’t be a competition arena, just showing who’s the best or even taking pride in our achievements if they are accomplished in callous ways. It should be about integrity, a value that we should uphold throughout our study period in school. (KA)
