“This is my first time I have had my own exhibition. My parents don’t have a clue what I have been doing all this time. But they are curious why my studying period is so long”, Sidik grinned as he introduced his first solo exhibition on August 24th, 2018 at Kitasuka Café, Yogyakarta.
Sidik has been actively participating in numerous ceramic exhibitions and for his first solo exhibition he chose “Reborn, Again and Again” as his theme, a theme that inspires him to keep on innovating and creating.
He retains an idealistic view about his art. He has always been passionate about finding ways to elevate the profile of the earthenware village of Pagerjurang, Klaten, in his every creation. Some of his products shown in the exhibition, like the mugs, are made using putaran miring, a sideway pottery spin method that is unique to the village. When combined with a modern glazing technique Sidik achieves a contemporary look quite different to the earthy-toned earthenware products usually made in Pagerjurang.
Titian CEO and Founder, Ibu Lily Kasoem was pleased to give the opening remarks. Also present at this event were Titian COO, Pak Riyanto Priadi and Sidik’s family.
Sidik Purnomo is a Titian Scholarship alumni from Generation 2. After finishing his studies at the vocational school SMKN 1 ROTA Bayat, Sidik received a one-year internship in Shigaraki, Japan. Once back in Indonesia, he then continued his education with an Arts major at the Indonesian Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta where he is currently in his ninth semester.
Sidik was recently named one of the winners of UNESCO’s Youth Creative Competition 2018, another impressive accomplishment to be added to his resume.
